Hurricane Kirk is headed for Europe

10/07/24

Hurricane Kirk which reached the fourth degree in the Atlantic and was accompanied by winds of up to 230 kilometers per hour is heading towards Europe unstoppably. Although the hurricane is weakening meteorologists expect it to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds to Europe.

Hurricane Kirk will pass through the extratropical transition in a few days and weaken to a deep depression before reaching Europe. Kirk will probably reach the shores of Europe on Wednesday. For now model differences remain in the exact track of the hurricane but it is expected to continue towards the north of Europe.

If forecast models come true the strongest winds and heavy rainfall can be expected mainly in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and then also in northern Germany. Other models show Kirk could move slightly further north and bring heavy rainfall to the southernmost part of England. The wind speed in Europe will reach up to one hundred kilometers per hour in some places.

Atlantic hurricane activity is high and in addition to Kirk Hurricane Leslie in the mid-Atlantic is being closely watched. Leslie recently reached Category 1 hurricane strength but is expected to continue to weaken and soon become a tropical storm.

Furthermore Tropical Storm Milton formed in the Gulf of Mexico, becoming the thirteenth storm this year. Milton will continue to strengthen and will likely become a hurricane heading toward Florida during Tuesday. The western part of Florida which was recently ravaged by Hurricane Helene will be most at risk.

The effects of Hurricane Kirk will probably be felt in the Czech Republic as well. Winds of 50 to 70 kilometers per hour will affect part of the country on Wednesday and Thursday. Kirk will also bring further rainfall to the Czech Republic which will occur until the end of the week.
