In northern Vietnam, hundreds of thousands of residents had to be evacuated as a result of typhoon Yagi. The water in the Red River, which also flows through Hanoi has reached a twenty-year high and part of the country is plagued by floods and landslides. As a result of the typhoon's rampage 179 residents have already died and hundreds more are missing.

Yagi became the strongest Asian typhoon of the year bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall to North Vietnam. The typhoon made landfall at the end of last week and gradually moved to the west of the Red River area. A bridge collapsed in one of the provinces.
The Vietnamese government reported on Wednesday that the search for 145 people is still ongoing. Water levels in the Red River rose to their highest level since 2004 according to a senior official at the National Weather Service.
Floods and landslides will continue to threaten residents in the vicinity of the capital in the coming days. Evacuations will continue in several provinces and all emergency services including volunteers will help people whose homes have been flooded.
Many of the evacuated residents are taken to temporary shelters where they are provided with water and food. Thanks to the rampage of typhoon Yagi operations in many factories and warehouses near Hanoi had to be interrupted. Due to the pessimistic forecast, operations here could only be restored in a few weeks which may also threaten global supply chains.
The state energy company EVM has decided to temporarily interrupt the supply of electricity to the flooded parts of the capital. Schools here will be closed at least until the end of the week. The damage from Typhoon Yagi's rampage has not yet been quantified and it will take months for local residents to deal with the consequences.
