Hundreds of firefighters in Greece have been battling multiple fires that have engulfed the islands of Kos and Zakynthos since last week. In addition, one of the fires began to get dangerously close to the suburbs of Athens where one resident lost his life shortly afterwards. After the heat wave that has lasted for three weeks in Canada hundreds of fires have started. Many of them are not under the control of firefighters, and their work is made difficult by strong winds and numerous storms. Most of the fires are currently raging in the province of Alberta and British Columbia. more

Meteorologists fear that this year's Atlantic hurricane season will be unusually strong. During it over two dozen tornadoes could form causing tens of billions of dollars in damage. That the predictions can be fulfilled was confirmed by the recent rampage of Hurricane Beryl which devastated several islands in the Caribbean in its long path, from where it moved to the Mexican Yucatan Peninsula and then continued to the Texas coast. more

Heavy downpours unleashed large-scale landslides in the south of Ethiopia which claimed more than two hundred lives. As a result of deforestation and subsequent soil erosion Ethiopia is facing increasingly frequent landslides. more

In northern Vietnam, hundreds of thousands of residents had to be evacuated as a result of typhoon Yagi. The water in the Red River, which also flows through Hanoi has reached a twenty-year high and part of the country is plagued by floods and landslides. As a result of the typhoon's rampage 179 residents have already died and hundreds more are missing. more

Mosses and lichens play a significant role in the structure and function of ecosystems due to their insulating properties. These properties result partly from increased reflectance and partly from the large proportion of air pore space when dry. This means that soil under bryophyte and lichen mats tends to be cold and moist. more
